Construction solutions for sustainable pre-engineered steel buildings

07-11-2023

Sustainability is always one of the concerns of enterprises when it comes to constructing a building. Since the construction of pre-engineered steel buildings is new terminology, there is still room for construction enterprises to do the investigation into sustainable solutions for this type of building. This article shall discuss some effective construction solutions which make pre-engineered construction more sustainable.

1. Sustainable pre-engineered steel building

Sustainability has always been a priority in the construction industry worldwide. A pre-engineered steel building is considered sustainable based on several aspects. First of all, it does not require a huge amount of material, energy, and space during construction and in use. Secondly, it does not deteriorate under the attack of different factors, such as harsh weather, terrain, disasters, and so on. Finally, it can be reused and recycled and does not cause the environment huge pollution after use.

2. Construction solutions for sustainable pre-engineered steel building

The previous part mentioned factors that make a building more sustainable. This part shall discuss solutions that ensure pre-engineered steel buildings reach the above sustainability requirements. It will go through several aspects of the pre-engineered steel building.

2.1 Design

Design is the first and foremost step of each construction process. In pre-engineered steel construction, the design phase plays a significant role. Efficient design can help reduce the significant amount of steel material used in the construction of the building, which can lower the building’s usage of energy and building’s waste.

An efficient design can be either applying advanced technology to process the drawings or minimizing material usage such as by better control of cross-sectional sizes or tapering steel sections.

The design team may also incorporate passive solar principles into the design of the building. This principle consists of using shading devices to control solar heat gain, incorporating thermal mass to store and release heat, improving energy efficiency, and reducing negative effects on the environment.

2.2 The usage of material

The use of material is also crucial in making a building more sustainable. Not only minimizing the use of steel but the selection of material types should be taken into account.

Pre-engineered steel buildings can be made more sustainable by using recycled steel in their construction. This type of material requires less energy to produce than new steel, which contributes to the reduction in the building’s impact on the environment.

Besides, pre-engineered steel buildings can be made more sustainable by using other sustainable materials such as FSC-certified wood, low-impact concrete, and so on.

Moreover, pre-engineered steel buildings can be made more sustainable by applying proper insulation. High-performance insulation materials, such as spray foam or cellulose, allow a decline in heat loss in the winter and heat in the summer.

2.3 Prefabrication

Unlike conventional steel building, pre-engineered steel building is tightly associated with the prefabrication phase. In this phase, all components are manufactured in a factory and then transported to the construction site.

Since this process involves making and shaping steel sections, it is essential to follow strictly the design which is accurate to a high level to ensure. For example, materials must be precisely measured, cut, tapered, and so on. This can improve the building's energy efficiency by reducing air leakage and heat transfer.

What is more, it is also important to create steel components that can easily be assembled and disassembled. This benefits the process of expansion or narrowing in size, as well as the process of demolition when the building’s life cycle is over.

2.4 Energy-efficient construction practices

It is crucial to use energy-efficient construction practices to minimize costs and wastage of the building. This can include things like using low-energy construction techniques, incorporating energy-efficient lighting and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, or using renewable energy sources like solar or wind power during the construction process.

Incorporating a green roof into the design of the building can help reduce air leakage, improve air quality, and provide insulation, thus minimizing the impact on the environment.

Finally, building automation, such as sensors to detect occupancy levels and adjust lighting and HVAC systems, optimizes building systems and reduces energy consumption.
